Future of Cemetery Services

Project Overview

Council is planning ahead to ensure that burial and memorial services continue to meet the needs of our growing and changing community.

We’re inviting all residents and stakeholders across the Fraser Coast to join the conversation and share what matters most when it comes to burial and memorial services. Many people hold strong personal, cultural, or spiritual beliefs around how we honour loved ones. Council is committed to respecting those values as we explore future options.

As we look to the future, we’re exploring what cemetery services the community may need or be planning for, and considering how Council’s services can continue to support those needs both now and over time.

Polson Cemetery can provide services for ashes interments and memorial gardens in the longer term. While there is still space available at Hervey Bay's Polson Cemetery for traditional burials, the site cannot be expanded further due to its location. Maryborough Cemetery has significant long-term capacity, with enough land avaialble for burials for hundreds of years at current rates.

Community feedback will help shape a sustainable and fair approach to cemetery services particularly in considering traditional burial services — one that balances our beliefs and traditions with practical considerations like cost, accessibility, and long-term sustainability.

How should we plan for the future of cemetery services in a way that is fair, financially sustainable, and respectful of community values?

This is a community-wide conversation, and your input will help Council understand community expectations, preferences, and values to inform future decisions.

Exploring the Options

Build a new local cemetery in Hervey Bay to ensure local access.

Expand use of existing cemeteries like Maryborough Cemetery, which has long-term capacity.

Expand other memorial options like, natural burials, memorial gardens or ashes interment.

Explore options for private providers to deliver new cemetery services

Adopt a blended approach that reflects the region’s diversity and evolving needs.

How should we plan for the future of cemetery services in a way that is fair, financially sustainable, and respectful of community values?

Understanding the Costs

Planning a new cemetery is a significant investment and requires consideration of financial impacts:

These costs would be in addition to the ongoing maintenance of existing facilities. Council is exploring whether this investment is feasible and in line with community priorities—or whether it would be more sustainable to use existing regional facilities. The future of our cemetery and memorial services must consider both our personal values and beliefs as well as financial costs and sustainability.
