Fraser Coast Waste Strategy Review

Project Overview

The Fraser Coast Waste Strategy 2019-2029 was adopted in July 2019 as a practical roadmap to reduce waste going to landfill and transition to a more circular economy by recovering and recycling more.

It is now due for its first comprehensive review, and Council is inviting our community to have a say on the current strategy to help us assess whether the 10-year plan remains aligned with Council priorities, community needs, and the latest state and national waste strategies.

Our community engagement will run from mid-January to mid-February 25.

The survey is now closed. Thanks for participating.

Did you know?

About 50% of household waste sent to landfill is food & organic waste. Most food and organic waste can be diverted by composting.

Glass bottles can take more than one million years to break down in landfill. Please dispose of glass bottles & jars in the recycle bin.

On average, every household disposes 130kgs/year of recyclables into general waste which could easily be recycled if disposed of in the recycle bin.

The community consultation for the review of the Fraser Coast waste strategy is now closed

Thank you for your participation and discussion.

The current Fraser Coast Waste Strategy 2019-2029 was developed in 2018.

An annual review is conducted to integrate identifed actions into yearly service delivery plans. A five-year review is due during the 2024-2025 financial year to ensure ongoing alignment with national and state waste strategies. This review will also assess strategic alignment with the internal Council and regional resource recovery plans.

Community engagement will occur simultaneously with the internal review process, seeking input on the current strategy and taking feedback on suggested changes/improvements.

Council has already achieved or nearly achieved more than 50% of the targets and objectives in the Strategy, including:

  • Improving recovery of kerbside recyclables by constructing a new Materials Recovery Facility (MRF)
  • Improving resource recovery at waste services by implementing programs such as polystyrene recycling
  • Reduction in the amount of waste that goes into landfill
  • Annual reduction in Council's environmental footprint
  • Construction of new MRF education room to educate the future generation of Fraser Coast
  • Development of the K’Gari waste strategy and site improvement of the Eurong Transfer station.
