Renaming Burrum District Community Centre

Project Overview

Council recently called for public comment on naming of the Burrum and District Community Centre as the Mal Chard Community Centre. SUBMISSIONS ARE NOW CLOSED.

The Burrum District Community Centre is located at 56 Steley Street in Howard, run by an incorporated association, the centre delivers a range of community services, public programs, facility hire and the Howard markets.

Mal and his wife retired to the Burrum District a community that they both loved in 1996. Providing a lifestyle balance between the bush he loved, and the beach his wife loved.

In 1998 Mal became involved in his community after identifying the need for the towns people to have their own place to come together and to link to much needed services.

Mal’s list of accomplishments is just as long as his volunteering contributions to the community, including but not limited to the following:

  • Chairman of the Burrum District Community Centre
  • Implemented Respite services in the Burrum District Community Centre
  • Championed the Burrum District Community Centre Markets
  • Involved in setting up the Men shed
  • Involved in the SES
  • Developed and implemented the Emergency evacuation plan
  • Driver for pick and drop off for Respite members to the center
  • Establishment of the Howard Ambulance station
  • Establishment of the cricket pitch and skate bowl in Howard; and
  •  Citizen of the Year - 2005.

Not only was Mal involved in meetings with Council, engagement and submissions, he wasn’t afraid to roll up his sleeves and get the job done.
