With direct Jetstar flights to and from Sydney starting last week, we thought we would share this video Fulton Hogan Airports prepared showcasing the recent refurbishment of the Hervey Bay Airport runway and airfield lighting.
As you are aware the Airport Renewal project is now complete.
As part of the process at completion there is a requirement for a series of checks and maintenance monitoring that is required for a period of time after the completion of the main bulk of project work. As such there is a requirement for further minor maintenance and defect rectification work to the Airport Ground Lighting (AGL) System that will require night works to limit impact to the runway. The maintenance work will take place from - Monday 12th April 2021 to Friday 16th April 2021 - for five nights.

Christmas shutdown 18/12/20 – returning 4/1/21
All works have now finished for 2020. There will be some hydroseed watering during the Christmas and New Year period, with works due to recommence 4 January 2021.
The final grooving has been delayed due to mechanical issues and at this stage will be recommencing 15 January 2021. Line marking will occur upon completion of the grooving (approximately 30 January 2021).
As mentioned in our last update, the grooving works will have to occur at night to avoid disruption to flights and minimise impact on residents and visitors using commercial passenger flights. While there will be some noise generated from the grooving, these works will not be as noisy as the laying of the asphalt and major works phase. All other works (i.e minor lighting etc) will be completed during the day.

Major works finished – Grooving works to start next week
As mentioned in our last update, the majority of works are now completed - including the refurbishment of the runway and improved airfield lighting.
About 45,000 tonnes of asphalt has been laid during the project with the main works completed four months ahead of schedule. The asphalt has now had a number of weeks to cure – and the final phase of works - grooving – will begin next week.
What do I need to know?
Works and Timeframes
The final grooving, and some final minor works (lighting and drainage) will take place from the 1 December – 19 December 2020. If there are delays (i.e weather) works will be halted over the Christmas and New Year period – with works to then recommence in January 2021.
The grooving works will have to occur at night to avoid disruption to flights and minimise impact on residents and visitors using commercial passenger flights. While there will be some noise generated from the grooving, these works will not be as noisy as the laying of the asphalt and major works phase. All other works (i.e lighting and drainage) will be completed during the day.

Majority of works to be completed in days - not weeks
The last of the runway asphalt works is scheduled to finish over this weekend, with plant demobilisation to happen over the next two weeks. The plant demobilisation is scheduled to take place during the day. (weather permitting etc)
Grooving Works
The final grooving works are schedule to occur in either early December or mid January - taking approximately two weeks (weather permitting). The asphalt needs to cure for eight weeks before the grooving can take place. Council will update stakeholders closer to the time.

Firstly apologies for the delay in this update, however we have some good news.
Majority of works will be completed within weeks
The Fraser Coast Airport Runway Renewal Project will be finished within weeks, four months ahead of schedule. The works will be complete by early November, except for the final grooving which will occur in mid-January 2021 - taking approximately two weeks (weather permitting). The asphalt needs to cure for eight weeks before the grooving can take place.
We acknowledge this has been a difficult time for local residents and our airport stakeholders. Your understanding and patience has been appreciated. This important work is necessary to ensure our airport continues to meet required national design and safety standards.
Why have we been able to finish sooner than expected?
The contractor has an onsite batching plant that can produce 300 tonnes of asphalt an hour, allowing two paving machines and crews to operate at once.
We apologise for the noise produced from these works, which occur at night to avoid disruption to flights. The night works have been necessary to minimise disruption to the airport during the day. For example, our airport is one of the busiest for the Royal Flying Doctors so we just couldn’t shut the airport for the duration of works.

21 February 2020
The refurbishment of the Hervey Bay Airport runway will start within weeks, with the Fraser Coast Regional Council awarding the tender to deliver the multi-million dollar project.
At its meeting this week, Council resolved to accept the tender from Fulton Hogan with the project
to be delivered in four stages over the next nine months.
Deputy Mayor Darren Everard said the runway renewal was the single biggest capital works project in Council’s 2019/20 budget and additional funding would be allocated within the 2020/21 budget to complete the project.
“The last major upgrade of the Hervey Bay Airport was almost 15 years ago when the runway was lengthened to allow for the introduction of jet services, so it’s in need of a facelift,” he said.
“The first stage of the project will improve lighting with the work expected to start within weeks and be completed by May.
“The subsequent stages are being done concurrently, and will involve reconstructing the runway pavement, rejuvenating the taxiway to the terminal used by daily commercial flights, and creating connectivity with the Avion precinct.
“With regular flights to and from Brisbane, Sydney and local tourism destinations carrying more than 180,000 passengers a year, it’s vital the runway continues to meet the required national design and safety standards, and that’s what this work is all about.”
Cr Everard said Council was committed to minimising the impacts to the community, businesses and airport services while the work was carried out.
“The lighting upgrades will be done during the day while the runway renewal will happen at night meaning there should be minimal to no impact on commercial passenger flights,” he said.
“All works will be monitored closely by Council and its external project managers with regular communication to occur with nearby residents and businesses.
“We thank everyone for their patience while this important work at the airport is carried out.”
The Hervey Bay Airport runway renewal project is being supported by a $9.19 million grant through the Australian Government’s Building Better Regions Fund and is identified as one of the key projects in the Hinkler Regional Deal.

Assessment is well progressed on the tenders received for the Airport Renewal Project. It is expected that Council will consider the tender recommendation report at its January 2020 meeting. While this is later than planned, it is important that a thorough assessment of the tenders is undertaken on this complex and important project. The delay in awarding the contract will mean that works are now not expected to start until February/March 2020.
The next project update will be provided in January 2020.

(*Updated July 2020) Council considered the report on the tenders received in February 2020. Council resolved to accept the tender from Fulton Hogan, with further planning occuring over the last few months. The works will be delivered concurrently in two main stages over 11 months. (*works due to start by the end of July 2020).
These works are vital to the airport’s infrastructure, so that the Airport continues to meet the required national design and safety standards for the continued service to residents and visitors of the Fraser Coast.
With regular flights to and from the Hervey Bay Airport to Brisbane, Sydney and local tourism destinations carrying (approximately) 180,000 passengers a year, it’s vital the Airport continues to meet necessary design and safety standards.
The last major upgrade of the Hervey Bay Airport was almost 15 years ago when the runway was lengthened to allow for the introduction of jet services to Sydney, with an external review finding a runway and lighting renewal is now needed.
(*Updated July 2020) The works will take approximately 11 months to complete with works being undertaken concurrently in two main stages (subject to delays). The first stage of the project will improve lighting with the work expected to start by the end of July 2020. The subsequent stages (due to start September 2020) will involve reconstructing the runway pavement, rejuvenating the taxiway to the terminal used by daily commercial flights, and creating connectivity with the Avion precinct.
(*Updated July 2020) The total works will be delivered concurrently, in two main stages, over the next 11 months (subject to any delays). The lighting upgrade will be undertaken first with works expected to start by the end of July and be completed by early September. The majority of the lighting upgrade work will be done during the day, with some night works to minimise impacts to flights.
The subsequent stages will involve overlaying the runway pavement, and rejuvenating the taxiway and aprons to both the terminal used by daily commercial flights and to the Avion precinct. The majority of this work on the runway, taxiway and aprons will have to occur at night, with some day works. This is to avoid disruption to flights and minimise impact on residents and visitors using commercial passenger flights.
(*Updated July 2020) No disruptions to Sydney or Brisbane flights are expected as a result of the runway and lighting works. However, normal flight delays can occur for many reasons e.g. delays caused by flights leaving Sydney or Brisbane later than scheduled. Passengers should contact their airlines directly with any queries on flight times, either during the project or at any other time. (*Please note this is not with standing the current covid-19 restrictions and flight schedule).
Council does not envisage any road closures for the duration of the project, but there will be an increase in traffic around the airport vicinity during the second stage of the works.
Traffic to and from the Airport will not be affected during daylight hours and during normal flight times. The main body of work is to be done during the night when no flights are scheduled.
Council has taken several measures to ensure that noise and dust are kept to a minimum during the project. The majority of the works will be done at night to minimise disruption to the community and the main areas of work are well away from residential zones.
